"As a bereavement coordinator for a hospice program I have had the opportunity to work with many people who are grieving the death of a loved one. . . . My experience is that most people experience a period of emotional numbness for days or weeks following a major loss."
More like months/years. 16 years ago my wife of a young 56 died from the effects of chemotherapy, our family doctor telling me later that "she fell through the cracks." And, as with the mother who may still miss her daughter after 20 years, I do miss my wife's exceptional beauty and sparkling joie de vivre. The most comforting note I received was from a Jewish woman and yoga student of hers: "I sit on the mourner's bench with you."
